Awnings and Canopies: What’s the Difference?

Many homeowners and business owners use the words awning and canopy interchangeably, but there are actually many differences between the two.

Many homeowners and business owners use the words awning and canopy interchangeably, but there are actually many differences between the two. These differences are especially important when you are planning on investing in either one for the comfort and curb appeal of your family or business. So, how are awnings and canopies different?

The Location They Are Used

The biggest difference between awnings and canopies is where they are installed and how people typically use them. Awnings are used to prevent light from entering a home or business. This prevents furniture and flooring from receiving sun damage and keeps heating and cooling costs low. Awnings can be permanent or retractable. The retractable versions are very common on patios or in outdoor seating areas so that people sitting below can enjoy the outdoors without the bright sunlight.

Canopies are typically freestanding and used to block out the sun over a seating area or gathering area. Canopies are not typically used at homes or businesses that already have awnings, but are a very popular temporary option for those looking to spend time outside.

The Way They Are Stored

Awnings, even ones that are retractable, are permanent structures that are firmly attached to your home. They provide shade every day of the year and also offer protection against snow and rain. Canopies need to be disassembled and put away whenever you aren’t using them. This can be a strength if you frequently travel and want portable shade, but a little bit cumbersome if you want a permanent structure in your yard.

The Effect They Provide

The last core difference between awnings and canopies is the amount that they can keep your home out of the sun. Awnings provide a great deal of energy savings because they thoroughly block out the sun. Canopies are good for providing temporary temperature adjustments, but they are certainly not a long-term solution.
