Fabric choices for residential awnings

When thinking about adding a residential awning to your property, it is important to know the pros and cons of each fabric choice.

When choosing a residential awning fabric, color and style is not the only decision you’ll have to make. There are many different reasons to choose one fabric over another. So before making your decision, let’s talk about some pros and cons!

Coated Cottons Fabrics

This cotton material has been coated to be resistant to fire, water, UV rays, and mildew. Although it is coated in a vinyl coating, this fabric has a cotton base that is not recommended in areas of high humidity. Standard warranties for coated cotton fabrics are three to five years.

Vinyl Fabrics

Vinyl fabrics come in two different types: laminated and coated. Laminated vinyl is considered the standard awning fabric. It is strong, waterproof, and durable for medium to large awnings. Coated vinyl is higher quality and is the most durable of the vinyl fabrics. It is also strong, waterproof, and durable for any size project. But coated vinyl is also stain resistant, which could come in handy during the spring and fall months. Vinyl fabrics are easily maintained. There are some downfalls to choosing vinyl fabrics. Although this fabric is durable, it is also not breathable as other fabric choices. It is also not as flexible as others, which could result in tears if you live in a windy area. This fabric also doesn’t come in as many color and pattern choices as other fabrics. Many vinyl fabrics come with a five, eight, or 10 year warranty.

Acrylic Fabrics

This fabric is extremely durable and repels water effectively. There is a wide variety of choices available in this fabric from including 100 percent acrylic, polyester coated acrylic, and cotton-polyester blends that are coated with acrylic. This fabric is heavy and can be transparent. It works well in areas of high humidity and is resistant to mildew and UV rays. Although this fabric is durable, it does tend to shrink in cool weather and stretch in hot weather. Many acrylic fabrics come with a 5-10 year warranty.

There are so many options for your new residential awning. After choosing your fabric, the only thing left to do is to sit back and enjoy the shade!
