Five Tips To Increase The Lifespan Of Your Awning

You want to take good care of your awning to increase the lifespan of it.

You just purchased a new awning for your home or business but are concerned about how long it’s going to last when the weather is always unpredictable. Since it is a structure that doesn’t move too much, the natural elements can sometimes take a toll. Luckily, there are some easy ways to ensure that your awning will last as long as it is supposed to. Here are five tips on how to increase your awning’s lifespan.

Keep It Clean

Dirt and debris is bound to build up on your awning since it sits outside all day. However, if you allow the dirt to build up for too long, it will eventually wear out the awning’s fabric. You want to use a hose to carefully clean off the top. Doing this once or twice a month will help it to last longer and keep it looking nice. Make sure that before you do this, you close all windows and doors to the building because you don’t want to get anything inside wet.

Use The Right Cleaning Supplies

Sometimes, the hose doesn’t completely do the trick and you must actually wash your awning. Do not settle for any old cleaning solutions as they could end up causing more harm than good. There are so many types of fabric you can choose from and each one needs to be cleaned differently. If you are unsure about what products to use, do not hesitate to reach out to an awning company to figure out what products to use.

Storage

When it’s time to take your awning down during the winter months, you need to be sure that you are storing it properly. It needs to be stored in a very dry location to prevent any mold or mildew from growing on the fabric. In addition to this, make sure there are no sharp objects close by that could puncture the fabric. Any containers full of liquid should be moved because they can leak and lead to staining.

Frames

We tend to pay a lot of attention to the fabric because it’s more fragile, but the frame is just as important. It will take a little bit more to damage the framing, but it is still a good idea to check on it every so often. You want to first make sure that it is properly installed because If not, it could become damaged quicker than it is supposed to. Weather conditions such as wind can also do a lot of damage to your awning’s frame. You want to address any damages as quickly as possible or it may become more extensive.

Avoid Extreme Heat Exposure

The sun will always be shining down on your awning during the warm months and there is no problem with that. The issue comes when your awning is exposed to extreme heat. It is not a good idea to grill underneath your awning because the heat could cause possibly damage or burn through it if it’s bad enough. The smoke can stain the fabric as well and after the money you’ve invested, that is the last thing you want to happen.
